Transcription of extract from Salisbury Journal 14th August 1739 reads: "By a letter from Pool dated the 6th instant we have an account that the "Samuel and Hannah", Captain Vallis, who arrived there that day from London, met with a French Man of War off Beachy and another off Fairlight standing to the eastward. He supposed them to be ships of 50 guns."
